What is FAFSA?
The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, determines your eligibility for federal, state, and some institutional aid. Completing it is the first step to accessing grants, work-study, and loans.
Many scholarships require FAFSA information, so filing ensures you’re considered for the maximum aid available. Even if you believe you may not qualify, submitting the FAFSA keeps your options open. The FAFSA normally opens October 1 each year, and applying early increases your access to available aid.
How to Complete the FAFSA
Filing the FAFSA is a straightforward process when you take it step by step.
- Create Your FSA ID. Set up your Federal Student Aid account at studentaid.gov. You and a parent, if required, will each need an FSA ID.
- Gather Required Documents. Have your Social Security number, tax returns, and income information available. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool can help transfer tax data securely.
- Add College of Saint Mary. Include CSMโs school code (002540) so we can receive your FAFSA information.
- Submit the FAFSA. Review your information carefully before submitting.
- Review Your Student Aid Report. After submission, you will receive a summary of your FAFSA data. Review it for accuracy and respond to any requests for additional information.
