Understanding the Cost
When families compare college costs, it is easy to assume that living on campus is the most expensive option. A closer look shows a more complete picture. The difference in total cost is often smaller than expected, and the value of living on campus can be significant.
CSM provides Total Cost of Attendance data each year based on surveys from current students. For housing, these estimates reflect what students are actually paying across different living options, helping families better understand and compare real costs.
Room & Board Expenses
- On Campus: $9,820
- Off Campus: $14,942
- Living with Parent or Relative: $3,936
Living at home appears to be the lowest-cost option, but these numbers do not take into account transportation expenses (gas, insurance, etc.) Off-campus living is the highest-cost option, largely due to higher housing and transportation expenses.

Other Things to Consider
On-campus housing includes more than just a place to live. It provides access to resources that support student success. Students living on campus benefit from:
- Immediate access to classes, labs, and campus resources
- Built-in meal plans and dining convenience
- A structured, supportive environment
- Easier connection to faculty, peers, and campus life
- Less time and money needed for transportation
- Planned, flat expenses (no surprise fees or charges)
The Bottom Line
Choosing where to live is a personal decision, and the right choice looks different for every student and family. What matters most is finding the environment where your student will feel supported and set up for success.
For many students, living on campus offers added value through convenience, connection, and access to resources. When you look beyond the sticker price, it can be a meaningful investment in both their experience and their overall success.
